With all that you can see and do in the St. George area of Utah one of the off the beaten path places is Yant Flat.
I first learned of its existence from a German friend who sent me a photo and asked if I could identify where the place was. My attempt was “somewhere in Snow Canyon State Park” With some glee he said nope it is “Yant Flat” obviously pleased that a foreign traveler knew of a place that his local friend did not. Yant Flat is located 4 miles north (as the crow flies) of Exit 16 on interstate 15 northeast of St. George, Utah. Easiest access road is from the small town of Leeds, Utah at Exit 22 from the south or Exit 23 from the north and then follow Silver Reef road which becomes Forest Road 32 then in a few miles follow the left road marked Forest Road 31 for about 10 miles to the intersection with FR903 and the trailhead to “Anna’s View Point” The good trail heads out onto Yant Flat which itself is a non-interesting brush covered sandy place. After about a mile the trail leads to the edge of the surrounding hills with a slickrock view of the desert stretching out for miles.
The slickrock with formations, patterns and colors similar to the “Wave” located in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument spreads out below and to the left for about another mile or so. The most colorful portion being at the end at a place locally called Rainbow Ridge.
This is a wonderful day excursion from the busy cities below. The road is a good gravel road which may be impassable in winter or wet seasons. Only having a chance to visit late one afternoon I could see that spending the better part of a day would be rewarding allowing more time to explore all that Yant Flat has to offer.
