Getting Out There

Utah’s Highest Ranges

Utah’s five Highest Mountain range summits, #5 The Wasatch Range:

The Wasatch Range is the fifth highest range in the state. Growing up in Nephi, Utah was a joy with mountains close. I was always hiking in the hills first and then on to Mount Nebo which as it turns out is the highest peak in the Wasatch mountain range. At 11,928 feet it was over a mile higher than my home town. I have climbed it many time and from a few different directions. Mountain Nebo consists of three peaks North, Middle and South peaks. In my growing up years the south peak which is visible to most of Nephi was the peak that everyone climbed.  It however, being 11,877 feet high was not actually the high point. It could even be climbed on horseback because of the quality trail built by the civilian conservation corp. (CCC) back in the mid 1900’s. The hike from South peak to the North peak via the ridge between the peaks was considered as a trip into wild territory and back. However, in the last few decades the trail to the north summit has been improved and now many hike directly to the highest summit. My last trip up the old childhood trail to South Peak was interesting because the trail is much fainter and more difficult to follow because so few hike that way anymore.

Nebo is a wonderful mountain to climb with possibly the only drawback being that there is little water on the mountain so carrying all your own water is a must. The mountain is the same type of rock of its sister to the north – Mount Timpanogos. But they actually don’t look much like each other. Timpanogos has glaciated valleys and a few small lakes whereas Mount Nebo does not. The reason for this is the way the rock is positioned. The limestone which makes up both mountains are oriented differently. Timpanogos rock is laid horizontally and thus gives the mountain more girth allowing for the high mountain basins and valleys. On the other hand Mount Nebo’s rock is tilted up at a very high angle, almost vertical in some places, therefore it erodes away differently making for a steep and narrow ridge holding only the shallowest of basins before the steep valleys drop off to the bottom of the mountain.

Mount Nebo is home to elk, mule deer, and mountain bighorn sheep with some black bear and mountain lion as well. One of the nice things about hiking Mount Nebo is that the trails from the north and the south spend much of their time right on the main ridge allowing the hiker commanding views of both sides of the mountain. The hikes from the trailheads are shorter than those of Timpanogos but can make them steep at times. Mountain Nebo can be hiked in a day making it a fantastic weekend destination for even the busiest person. Give it a try you will not regret it.
