Continuing from above Peek-o-boo Slot canyon simply follow the obvious trail to the right cross country to the next main drainage. It is a little over a third of a mile from where you leave the one wash before you reach the next wash it is very obvious and cannot be missed. Once there simply follow the wash into the slot.
A few words of caution needs to be shared. If you didn’t fit through the gauge at the parking area then you will have trouble fitting through this slot. Also the tightest portion is at the bottom of the slot and there are a few obstacles that are fairly easy to go down but, may be a huge struggle to get back up. I believe this is another reason they recommend going up Pee-o-boo slot and down Spooky slot canyon.
On my first experience with these two slot canyons, years ago, we went up Spooky Slot. We got through the tightest portion easily and then near the top we came to a section that was a circular channel that went steeply up. After getting my two adult children up the slope I needed to somehow get up. I’m 6’2” and the channel was too narrow to bend my knees to get any foot hold. They practically drug me up the channel.
Once it narrows you will come to the most challenging obstacle the choke stone drop. Here one must drop into the lower canyon down the pile of boulders blocking the way. While there are a couple of options, the best one is to locate the rope that has been left which will help you in lowering yourself down into the slot below. Here again with the help of others hiking this can be managed. If however, you decide that this is too much of an obstacle then there is an easier way out and around the slot portion. Simply return up to the open wash upstream and the climb the sand along the left side of the wash until you are in the open country then just parallel the canyon staying on the sand which will also slope down into Dry Fork and once down at that level simply swing left and enter Spooky from the bottom. One can experience at least some of Spooky until it gets too narrow or you encounter hikers coming down stream then you should yield to them. From the mouth of Spooky turn around and head back towards the sandy slope you just came down but instead of climbing back up follow the trails heading into a walled corridor heading at a right angle to the slope. This will lead you back to the main wash of Dry Fork and back to the trail out of the canyon.
These two canyons are short but are very amazing and worth the effort. During the main season you will be with many others so patience will need to be exercised.
The light within the canyon can provide for a wonderful scene and adds greatly to the experience of awe.
