Hondu Arch is perhaps the largest arch in the San Rafael Swell and for many, if not all of those who have seen the arch, it is from the road far below near Muddy Creek.
On one of my adventures I set out to hike to the rear of the arch and witness it from up close and from behind. My trip first required driving into the somewhat mysterious Mussentuchit Badlands an area located to the west of the “Swell.”
How did it get such an interesting name, well if you speak clearly enough it makes more sense. It is the “must not touch it” badlands and in a way it is mostly left untouched. Far into the badlands a road up a shallow wash will bring one to the western edge of the rocky “reef” of the San Rafael Swell.
Hiking along the mostly flat rim allows for multiple awesome views.
After some 3.5 miles and crossing the heads of 5 small drainages I reached my destination and was afforded unparalleled views of the Arch standing high on the canyon wall. The Arch is perched such that had I desired I could have walked out on the top of the arch and enjoyed the view.
However, to be able to sit across a deep ravine canyon directly in front of the Arch and peer through the arch down to the road where most others look up from was fun.
There is no trail to this location and it does take considerable route finding skills to negotiate the number of ravines and cliff bands that are encountered. For those wishing to experience the hike yourself drop me a message and I will fill you in on the route and obstacles you will encounter. This area is remote and one may catch a glimpse of wild horses or burrows. And as mentioned above there are several opportunities to see the vast interior of the Swell from this route.
